Science
At Bourne Alliance we believe that pupils should develop a sense of awe for natural phenomena and an enquiring mind about the world around them. Pupils should have the confidence and skills to be able to find scientific solutions and truth for themselves through practical enquiry. They should be able to apply scientific method throughout every area of their lives. We recognise that science surrounds us and is vital to the future. At Bourne Alliance we believe that pupils should be ready to adapt and contribute in a changing world.
All children deserve broad and balanced Science education regardless of ethnic, origin, gender, class, aptitude or disability. We aim to build pupils Cultural Capital, through our Curriculum, by ensuring knowledge is local, learning is contextualised and life enriching activities underpin our learning.
Scientific Enquiry
In order to embed investigation skills in pupil’s long term memory, our pupils complete at least one full science investigation each term. The investigation asks children to apply the knowledge that they have learnt throughout the term. We believe the investigation skills are core knowledge that pupils should master before they leave our school in year 6.
Sequencing
We follow the National Curriculum units/Primary Science Scheme of Work and sequence our knowledge from year to year, term to term and week to week. We spend time ensuring pupils have all of the skills (building blocks) they need to master and develop their science knowledge.
Explorify
We use Explorify! You can join it is free! It is packed full of videos, photos and informative opportunities for children to spend plenty of time talking about their scientific knowledge, sharing ideas and pulling their learning into their experiences ready to apply in day to day life.
Thinking Doing Talking Science
We follow this approach to science which enables to children investigate and explore with minimal recording. We want to encourage thinking, talking and doing within our science curriculum.
Diversity
We are mindful that diverse scientists are represented within our curriculum. We study their experiences and scientific findings from a historical and contextual perspectives. We strongly believe that everyone can become a scientist!
